Lawrence David| Opinion| Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler is the new face of the Democrat Party by, in my view, posing as a de facto representative of his city’s Antifa movement.
Mayor Wheeler also serves as Portland’s police commissioner. If you don’t see a problem with that arrangement, then read on.
We saw what happened when Manchurian President Barack Obama essentially controlled the FBI for his own purposes. He turned it into a weapon against his political opponents.
Wheeler has done the same thing in his city and, as with Obama, ordinary citizens suffered when the rule of law was ignored.
Wheeler’s police did little to stop the madness while anarchists smashed store windows, committed physical assaults, looted local businesses, and attempted to burn buildings to the ground.
Here’s a July 16th tweet from Wheeler:
“A number of people Ra asked if I know DHS leadership is in town, and if I’m going to meet with them. We’re aware they’re here. We wish they weren’t. We haven’t been invited to meet with them, and if we were, we would decline.”
Now that two months of anarchy has finally been answered by the arrival of federal officers to protect federal buildings from destruction, and many of the Democrat-aligned anarchists are being arrested, Wheeler is begging for a meeting with Homeland Security chief Chad Wolf.
Commissioner @JoAnnPDX and I are calling for an immediate meeting with Department of Homeland Security leadership on the ground in Portland and with Acting Secretary @DHS_Wolf to discuss a cease-fire and the removal of heightened federal forces from Portland.

Wheeler realizes that too many of the agitators he counts on to give the appearance that this is a movement of some heft are arrested, the fringe ‘protestors’, those not committed to the nightly violence and with no interest in being tear-gassed or engaging the legal hassle, have begun abandoning the cause reducing the numbers significantly.
If enough soft protestors fail to show up there’ll be nowhere for the violent anarchists to hide. Like other terrorists that hide in schools and hospitals, these radical leftist operatives need the same cover to keep from being arrested.
What does Wheeler do in response? He wants to negotiate the removal of the federal presence so that the rioting anarchists can continue driving their Marxist agenda.
Ironically, Democrats are suddenly crying that the federal government has overstepped its authority… the same Democrats who have constantly sought to vest all power in a single federal ruling authority.
If the Portland mob is full of peaceful protesters, why is the mayor trying to negotiate a "cease-fire"? https://t.co/0V0vqGAuze

Wheeler should know that the Trump administration doesn’t negotiate with terrorists.
