Team Ocasio-Cortez Slips Up & Admits What The Green New Deal Is Really About … Overhauling The Entire American Economy

Kirsters Baish’s Opinion| | It was admitted, by her top aid, that self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York’s “Green New Deal” seems to be more focused on overhauling the country’s economy, than it is on dealing with the issue of climate change.

The Daily Caller reports:

Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti, made the revealing admission in a meeting with Democratic Washington Gov. Jay Inslee’s climate director in May. A Washington Post reporter accompanied Chakrabarti to the meeting for a magazine profile published Wednesday.

“The interesting thing about the Green New Deal, is it wasn’t originally a climate thing at all,” Chakrabarti stated to Inslee climate director Sam Ricketts. “Do you guys think of it as a climate thing?” Because we really think of it as a how-do-you-change-the-entire-economy thing,” Chakrabarti continued.

The Caller explains that “Ocasio-Cortez’s press office didn’t immediately return an inquiry regarding whether Chakrabarti’s admission would undermine the congresswoman’s Green New Deal advocacy. The Green New Deal calls for a number of hard left proposals, including getting the U.S. entirely off of fossil fuels within 10 years, providing universal health care, basic income programs and job guarantees.”

The proposal pushes for “social, economic, racial, regional and gender-based justice and equality and cooperative and public ownership.”

Moving to “clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources” within the next decade, which is one of the expensive proposals mentioned in the Green New Deal, could cost as much as $5 trillion or more, according to an estimate.

The Daily Caller reports, “The Green New Deal in its entirety could cost up to $93 trillion over a decade, according to another estimate.”

Fox News reports:

The Green New Deal, once an idea on the fringe left of the Democratic Party, has picked up significant mainstream support this year, with a number of top 2020 contenders signing their names to a non-binding resolution pushed by Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass.

Ocasio-Cortez has called the deal “a wartime-level, just economic mobilization plan to get to 100% renewable energy.” The plan, which would cost trillions, sees the U.S. taking a “leading role in reducing emissions through economic transformation.”

It goes on to say that “a new national social, industrial and economic mobilization on a scale not seen since World War II and the New Deal” is an opportunity to tackle systemic injustices of minority groups, create millions of high-wage jobs and “provide unprecedented levels of prosperity and economic security for all people of the United States.
