Opinion| Lawrence David| For those worried that members of the ‘Resistance’ against President Trump might be getting off without punishment adequate to deter a similar Deep State coup attempt in the future, take heart from a speech that the U.S. Attorney General recently gave.
U.S. Attorney General William Barr was the featured guest and keynote speaker at The Federalist Society this week where he spoke for an hour on the usurpation of power from the executive by both the legislative and judicial branches of government, in general.
More significantly, he specifically tore into the self-proclaimed ‘resistance’ against President Trump as a threat to our constitutional form of government, not just now but for future generations.
Here are some of the highlights from Barr’s speech that provide insight into the attoney general’s mindset.
As you listen, keep in mind that Barr is the one person so situated, at this time and place in history, to save not only President Trump, but the Republican form of government the Framers gave us.
AG Barr: … I deeply admire the American Presidency as a political and constitutional institution. I believe it is, one of the great, and remarkable innovations in our Constitution, and has been one of the most successful features of the Constitution in protecting the liberties of the American people. More than any other branch, it has fulfilled the expectations of the Framers.
Unfortunately, over the past several decades, we have seen steady encroachment on Presidential authority by the other branches of government. This process I think has substantially weakened the functioning of the Executive Branch, to the detriment of the Nation.
After further discussion about the importance of the role that the Framers had in mind for the president, Barr then speaks directly to the illegitimate actions against President Trump by what has come to be termed the Deep State.

Immediately after President Trump won election, opponents inaugurated what they called “The Resistance,” and they rallied around an explicit strategy of using every tool and maneuver available to sabotage the functioning of his Administration. Now, “resistance” is the language used to describe insurgency against rule imposed by an occupying military power. It obviously connotes that the government is not legitimate. This is a very dangerous – indeed incendiary – notion to import into the politics of a democratic republic. What it means is that, instead of viewing themselves as the “loyal opposition,” as opposing parties have done in the past, they essentially see themselves as engaged in a war to cripple, by any means necessary, a duly elected government.
The fact of the matter is that, in waging a scorched earth, no-holds-barred war of “Resistance” against this Administration, it is the Left that is engaged in the systematic shredding of norms and the undermining of the rule of law.
Barr’s speech expresses, both, his appreciation for the powers that the Framers placed in the presidency in general, as well as his fealty towards restoring the delicate balance of powers that he sees as having been stripped from President Trump in particular.
The attorney general’s entire scholarly speech is more than 6200 words in length. If you have the inclination it is well worth your time. You can access it here.
The inspector general’s report is expected to be released around Thanksgiving after extensive delays. Those delays are not likely to be because they found no evidence of wrongdoing. They’re likely the result of this being bigger than anyone wants to acknowledge.
US Attorney John Durham has transitioned from an investigation to a criminal prosecution. Our sources say that Durham has convened a grand jury and they are already hearing evidence.
There has been no indication as to when Durham will be prepared to present his case to the public but the longer this takes, the more likely it is to be both damning and to encompass a wide range of treacherous, if not traitorous, government agents.
Regardless of when the IG report is released to the public, and when indictments begin being handed down, the discomfort and night sweats have begun.
“Our movement is about replacing a failed and corrupt establishment with a new government controlled by you, the American people.”
