Opinion By Mark Sidney: Sometimes I sit and contemplate what exactly the Republican establishment is thinking trying to abandon Trump and throw him under the bus.
I wonder if they understand that everyone I talk to down here in the South, no longer calls themselves a Republican, yet they are emphatic about their support for President Trump.
Does the Republican power structure realize that they only reason they are even still relevant is because of Trump?
In my view, and this piece is all based on my opinions and speculation, if the Republicans had run a Romney or a Ryan, we would be taking orders from Madam Hillary, the 45th President of the United States.
I have to think that these politicians, and the real power players behind them, understand this, likely much better than I do.
If we accept this as truth, then what are guys like Romney thinking? Is he purposely trying to fracture and destroy the Republican party by trashing Trump?
Do they want to hand the nation over to the radical Democrats, who seem hell bent on taking over all aspects of the economy and people’s lives (in my opinion)?
This is why it was troubling to hear the first thing McConnell said when asked about what the Senate would do if the House Impeached President Trump, even if it is factual truth.
Here's Mitch McConnell on CNBC saying that if the House passes articles of impeachment, "under the Senate rules we're required to take it up … I would have no choice but to take it up. How long we're on it is a whole different matter." pic.twitter.com/lTVQHZrGxS

Mitch McConnell: “Under the Senate rules we’re required to take it up … I would have no choice but to take it up. How long we’re on it is a whole different matter.”
Yes, after explaining the rules, he pushed back suggesting conviction was a non starter, but do you really trust McConnell or Romney or anyone else, other than Ted Cruz and maybe Rand Paul, in the Senate? Hell, even Mike Lee seems to be gunning for the President these day, at least that’s how I see it.
I pray the Republicans do not abandon Trump, for if they do, I know the people will abandon them. I fear for our country if they do. We need to rally around the President and help him expose the corruption of ALL previous administrations, both Democrat AND REPUBLICAN.
If Trump is able to ‘drain the swamp’ we then need to be careful to ensure that only the guilty parties are convicted and that Trump does not let the power go to his head and begin to believe that he is above the law. I am not saying I think this will happen, I am merely saying that we must be on guard for it, as if the opposition party is lead away in cuffs, it becomes a slippery slope very quickly and it will be up to us to ensure this does not occur.
